Why Novak Djokovic disqualified from the Grand Slam
In the absence of two veterans, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic was considered a strong contender for the title. But now he has become the third player to be disqualified from the Grand Slam.
World number one Novak Djokovic has been ruled out of the US Open. Djokovic was disqualified for hitting a female officer with the ball.
The pre-quarter-final match between Serbia's Djokovic and Spain's Pablo Kareno Busta began on Sunday.
Djokovic was trailing 5-6 in the first set against Busta. He then hit the ball in a fit of rage. Joe hit a female officer standing on a court and she fell down.
After the announcement, Djokovic greeted him and walked out of the court. Djokovic has become the third player in the world to be disqualified from the Grand Slam.
John McEnroe was disqualified from the Australian Open in 1990 and Stefan Kobeke from the French Open in 2000.
Djokovic was considered the main contender for the US Open title this year after Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal withdrew from the tournament.
Djokovic has won 17 Grand Slam titles so far. Federer has won 20 and Nadal 19.
